Chapter Thirteen

Eliza

I woke up the next morning wondering what in the hell I must have been thinking.

I hadn’t been drunk or drugged. No, this had been some other kind of intoxication. One driven purely by lust and curiosity that spoke to the virgin who wanted more.

I suppose this had always been what I wanted. Waiting seemed an eternity, a prison sentence I had placed on myself without knowing the end. Who knew if I was ever going to meet Mr. Right? What if I died an old maid without ever having sex?

Though to be fair, it had been much more than ordinary sex. Not that I had anything else to base it off of beyond crude explanations from friends. Still, the experience affected me deeper than the sheer mechanics of the act. Hell, after the second orgasm, I was positive I knew all the answers to the universe’s questions.

It had to mean something, didn’t it?

Maybe Justin didn’t love me, but there was no denying the attraction I felt for him. Maybe ... even more than an attraction.

It was a thought I allowed begrudgingly to enter my mind. I wasn’t in love with him. I wasn’t even entirely sure I was falling for him yet. But if I had to make a mistake with anyone, give in to unrelenting desires with a man who didn’t love me in return, it might as well be him.

All that was certain was two days from now, we’d be on a flight headed back home. We’d return to our separate lives, meeting only in a professional capacity, and I would have an extra two hundred thousand dollars to do with what I wished.

The only question was how long were we to keep up this charade? How long after we returned home did we have to wait before announcing our break up? And what would that mean for us in the workplace?

Good God. Everyone in the office would need to know. They likely knew already. So, what would they think when we returned to the office only to renounce the engagement?

Now, we were on our way to meet Rosalie. She was partly to blame for this whole mixup. If the deal did go through, it wasn’t like we could just call off the engagement as soon as we returned home. She’d get suspicious. Hell, she already was suspicious of Justin and his hairbrained proposal for her property. No wonder he was having trouble competing with companies like Sawyer’s.

“How long are we to be engaged?” I asked finally.

Justin turned to face me, nearly missing the color change of the red light to green as he stared awestruck. “What?”

“We never discussed how long this little charade is supposed to go on,” I said, facing forward. I amused myself with the passing buildings, the incredible plant life, and small town, Southern charm. These were all things you didn’t get back in San Francisco and all things that distracted me from looking Justin in the eye.

“When we get back to work,” I continued.
